Overview
Mahabalipuram,
located in the state of Tamil Nadu, is a town appealing to both tourists and
pilgrims alike. It is located at a distance of 60 km from Chennai, the state
capital. The one-time capital city of the Pallava dynasty, Mahabalipuram has
some of the most brilliant pieces of history to offer. The city with its
beaches and the stunning rock-cut architecture turns out to be an
irresistible destination for tourists. The biggest attraction in the town,
however, is the Shore Temple. Apart from that the Mahabalipuram Dance
Festival, held between January and February, is a big draw for tourists from

The town of Mahabalipuram has a hot and humid type of climate. The summer
temperature touches a usual high of 35 degrees centigrade and never comes
below 19 degrees. The town receives a good amount of rainfall from June to
August increasing the humidity all the more. The ideal time for tourists to
make a trip here is between the months of October and March.

» Shore Temple
One of the ancient in the southern part of India, the Shore Temple is one
of the biggest attractions for visitors to Mahabalipuram. Its history dates
back to the 8th century AD. The structure of the temple marks the first
phase of flourishing Dravidian style of architecture.
» Arjuna's Penance
Having the eminence of being the largest bas relief sculpture in the world,
the rock carved structure is named after Arjuna, the legendary hero of the
Hindu epic Mahabharata. The sculpture represents Arjuna's penance to attain
a blessing from Lord Shiva.
» Five Rathas
Also
referred to as the Pancha Pandava Rathas, these monolithic temples command
appreciation as they have been carved out of a single piece of rock.
» Mahabalipuram Beach
This beach lies along the coastline of the state of Tamil Nadu. Tourists
come here to sunbathe and relax amid peaceful ambiance. Pilgrims can also
been seen taking bath here.

and the country. Chengalpattu, 29 km away, is the closest railhead. Chennai,
however, is the convenient and major railway station with trains from all
over India. Through road routes, Mahabalipuram is linked with places like
Chennai, Chengalapattu, Pondicherry, Kanchipuram and other cities and towns
of the state.
