Introduction
The exoticism, white sandy beaches, swaying palms, scenic lagoons and the coral riches make the Union Territory of Lakshadweep a much travelled destination for visitors to India. Set free in the azure Arabian Sea, it is an archipelago of around two dozen islands. The islands occupy an area of 32 square kilometres and span over 30,000 square miles of the Arabian Sea. Climate
The islands of Lakshadweep experience a climate similar to that of the Keralan coast. Tropical climate prevails all over with temperature varying from 25 degrees to 35 degrees centigrade. The southwest monsoons bring here a lot of rain; the average annual rainfall measures 1600 mm. Temperature shows maximum in the months of March, April and May.

Important Islands
Of all the islands, only ten are inhabited including Andrott, Amini, Agatti, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmath, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kiltan and Minicoy. Kavaratti, located on the Kavaratti island, is the capital city of Lakshadweep. As per the Census 2001, the total population of this union territory adds up to 60,595. Tourists require a permit to visit the islands. There are a few islands where no foreigners are allowed.

People & Culture
The residents of the Lakshadweep islands are sociable and warm. They follow their spiritual beliefs with all the respect and sincerity. Muslims (around 90%) form the majority of the islands' population. The race of these people trace their descent to the Arabs and the Hindus. Malayalam is chiefly spoken in all the islands with the only exception of Minicoy (where Mahl is spoken). Conservative disciplines and traditions still exist due to the indigenous population of Muslims.

Air/ Rail/ Road Link
The Agatti Airport of Lakshadweep has regular flights to Kochi, the capital city of Kerala. Cochin, being an international airport, has links with all the major destinations of the country. An air-journey between Agatti and Kochi spans an hour and a half. If you are not arriving in monsoons, you can also avail of ships that ply between Agatti and Kochi. By ship, it takes 18 to 20 hours to reach the Agatti Island in Lakshadweep.
